criteria d: [primary manic episode:]  the episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance (i.e., a drug of abuse, medication) or to another medical condition. {a69} note: a full manic episode that emerges during antidepressant treatment (e.g., medication, electroconvulsive therapy) but persists at a fully syndromal level beyond the physiological effect of that treatment is sufficient evidence for a manic episode and, therefore, a bipolar i diagnosis. etiological medical conditions include: alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, hiv-induced dementia, huntington's disease, lewy body disease, wernicke-korsakoff, cushing's disease, multiple sclerosis, als, parkinson's disease, pick's disease, creutzfelt-jakob disease, stroke, traumatic brain injuries, hyperthyroidism. etiological substances/medications include: alcohol (i/w), phencyclidine (i), hallucinogens (i), sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics (i/w), amphetamines (i/w), cocaine (i/w), corticosteroids, androgens, isoniazid, levodopa, interferon alpha, varenicline, procarbazine, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin. *must provide value
